Training Benchmarks Update for Standard Business Sponsorships

There has been some confusion about whether a sponsor must keep with the same training benchmark from one year to another, or whether a sponsor can change benchmarks.

DIAC has just released the following advice that training benchmarks can be changed:

“An approved sponsor is required, throughout the term of their approval, to ensure that they continue to meet one of the training benchmarks. There is no requirement for the sponsor to continue to meet the same benchmark that they were originally approved against so long as one of the benchmarks has been met.”

The training benchmark options are as follows:

Training Benchmark A

Recent expenditure by the business, to the equivalent of, at least 2% of payroll allocated to an industry training fund, and a commitment to maintain that expenditure over the life of the sponsorship.

OR

Training Benchmark B

Recent expenditure by the business, to the equivalent of, at least 1% of payroll, in the provision of training to Australian employees of the business, and a commitment to maintain that expenditure over the life of the sponsorship.

If you change the benchmark detailed on your application, you are required to notify DIAC of these changes.

For nominations for Employer sponsored (ENS) and Regional sponsored (RSMS) permanent visa applications, the training benchmark will be assessed whether the sponsor has met one of the benchmarks for each year of approval, regardless of whether different benchmarks were met for alternating years.
