Mila program was launched in 2014 at Collie Senior High School, located in the south-west region of Western Australia. The aim of the program is to explore Aboriginal students’ passions, beliefs, both enabling and limiting, in the context of making positive choices about their future. Aboriginal students are highly encouraged to work on their personal vision, passion and goals through experiential learning and attend talks delivered by inspiring speakers and role models.
The program, which means, “in the future” in Noongar, is the inaugural program of the Mila Foundation with the primary sponsor, Perdaman Global Services, one of Australia’s leading specialist with a global presence in immigration, recruitment and human resources. Through sponsorship and donations, inspirational keynote speakers and mentors are commissioned to speak to participants and participate actively in their development. Background information on the Mila Mentoring Program
What is the Mila Mentoring Program?
The Mila Program mentoring team works with Aboriginal students to further their personal vision, passion and goals through experiential learning, and features presentations from inspiring guest speakers and role models. Perdaman Global Services coaches and mentors work with the students to explore their passions, their beliefs (both enabling & limiting) in the context of making positive choices about their future. The program also focuses on proudly embracing the children’s Aboriginal Heritage.
How is the program run?
The Mila Program consists of six half-day sessions alternating between group and individual coaching with the purpose of meeting the personal needs of each student’s vision and their goals for the future. Each session is conducted at Harris River Estate in Collie which is a stimulating learning environment, separate to school, to enable students to focus on self improvement.
Why male students to start with?
The Mila Mentoring Program will only cater for male students in its inaugural year as there is currently only one young male mentor with the ability to relate to the participants and most importantly, one who has previously experienced the ongoing issues which impede progression towards a successful future.
Who is involved with the program?
The mentoring team consists of two staff members from Perdaman Global Services and a pathways specialist from the University of Western Australia’s School of Indigenous Studies.
Our team has Working with Children and National Police Clearances.
Is there any expansion plans for the program?
After the first year of running the Mila mentoring program, the objective is to expand into a larger demographic within Collie Senior High School. This will incorporate the participation of a female lead mentor who will work alongside our existing team with female Aboriginal students.
What cost are involved for the student/school/parents?
The only investment required of the student is time, attention and active participation. Through the generosity of sponsors such as Perdaman Global Services, the Program is fully funded, so there’s no cost to schools or parents.
What do students get from being involved with the program?
Students get a tailor-made pathway, complete with key performance indicators and goals at every step of the way for them to achieve their personal vision and passion. Students also receive ongoing support from mentors as they continue on their pathway. To foster camaraderie and sense of belonging to the program, Perdaman Global Services specially designed a T-shirt incorporating the Aboriginal colours for students to wear.
How is the program structured?
The program is structured in a way that each group and individual session corresponds to a module which comprises the following: ‘Who I Am’, ‘Where I Am Going’ and ‘Celebrating
Who I am and Where I am Going’.
What do the students have to do?
Students have to complete a small amount of follow up work after each session to reinforce the information presented and essentially to ensure information retention. We believe this journey will allow the students to take ownership and have pride in the work undertaken, leading towards a positive experience in being associated with the program.
